One of our most recent projects that we completed was a custom Elfa system for a client’s garage. Her garage had absolutely no storage options and she wanted to achieve a streamlined, functional and esthetically pleasing space for her storage. We absolutely love creating custom systems for our clients that are also adjustable and can grow with them as their needs change. That is the beauty of the Elfa system. In order to achieve the desired result that our client wanted we first went through the items she wanted to store in the garage and categorized them. This allowed us to know exactly what we needed to create space for and if there were any tricky items that would need special consideration. Once we knew what items were staying it was time to measure. As professional organizers we sometimes have to wear many different hats and occasionally one of them is a builder/contractor hat! It is so important to take accurate measurements and properly space plan when investing in a custom Elfa System. If you’re going to try and measure a space yourself we recommend having a family member or friend assist you. An extra pair of hands and eyes is always helpful!

 

Once we had our measurements we headed to The Container Store to create the design for our client. A huge benefit of choosing a professional organizer for a project like this is our knowledge and experience in determining the most effective solutions to maximize your space. Our client loved the design and we scheduled an installation date!

After the installation of the Elfa system it was finally time to start organizing! Our client was able to keep all of her items in the initial categories that we created on our first day at the project. This allowed us to easily transfer the items to matching storage bins. When choosing products for any project we always consider our client’s wants and needs. Our client was very concerned about spiders getting into her items, so we opted for the Clear Weathertight Totes. These are a favorite of ours in garages as they have an air-and watertight seal. This ensures no pests or moisture will get into your bins and damage your items. We also were able to utilize some larger storage bins that our client already had that fit with the esthetic of the Clear Weathertight Totes. It was important to our client that the storage bins were cohesive as she would see them everyday when entering her home through the garage.

Our client also had quite a few items that we knew a utility track would be perfect for. She had some brooms, mops, folding chairs, etc. that would be most effectively stored on a utility track with hooks. We included a utility track in the custom Elfa Design and then added a couple additional hooks as needed. Utility tracks are one of our favorite systems to implement in garages as it gets all of your items off the floor and creates such easy access for your items.

The next area we tackled was the drawer units in the Elfa System. We designed these drawers with our client’s tools and utility items in mind. Utilizing the Elfa Drawer Dividers also allowed us to create even more separation and organization for different tools.

Finally we addressed the items that our client wanted to have easy access to without taking a lid off of a bin. This included items like gardening supplies, pest control, cleaning etc. We chose the Chancellor Basket for these categories because the open design encourages easy access and the durable material ensures easy cleanup incase of any spills.

Our client was thrilled with her garage at the end. She even said it was like Christmas morning! There is nothing better than knowing we made such a positive change to our client’s life through organization. By creating a system that perfectly met her individual needs, while also offering the flexibility to change as needed, we know our client will now feel joyful every time she enters her house through her garage!
