How to Organize an Elfa Playroom + Virtual Learning Space

My last post showcasing the Elfa system I organized for my tween daughter’s virtual learning space was so well received, I couldn’t wait to get this one finished for those of you with multiple and smaller kids. The Container Store’s Elfa closet system is so customizable for literally any space in your home, so using it to help provide dedicated learning spaces for your kids while you help them navigate through all the changes to their learning due to coronavirus is a wonderful idea.

The sweet family we organized this Elfa system for has a four year old and a seven year old, who are both currently doing hybrid learning which means they go to school some days and do virtual learning on others. As a result, mom wanted to make sure they had a space that was conducive for the days they are learning at home and provided them with everything they needed for each school day.

Prior to installing the system, the space was exclusively a playroom. Here’s a view of it before.

As you can see, there was little structure to the room and no storage in the main area. There are also two closets, not shown here, where many toys were stored.

The original design plan (below) included three rows of shelves above for storage and the bottom area for their desk stations and 2 drawers for each child. We designed this space on behalf of our client, but The Container store also has an online design tool that you can use yourself,  a Virtual In-Home Design service, or you can go in-store to work with a designer.

And here it is after installation. Once we dug in and started organizing, I decided that we needed to add in more drawers which you will notice in the after shots. The ability to alter the system as you see fit is a HUGE selling point for Elfa systems. You can add in or remove shelves, drawers, hanging rods, and a host of other items at any time allowing you endless possibilities.

And now the final reveal! Cue all the heart eyes!!

As you can see, I added in 3 more drawers on each side. In addition we removed a row of shelves above (there were three originally) since they do not have a need for the extra storage space at the moment. That allowed us to bring the entire solution a little higher to accommodate the changes we made.

Here’s what we did on their daughter’s side. We had mom pick up a few decor pieces to mix in with our organization that she knew her daughter would love.

Here are all the links for items that can be found online. The other items were purchased at HomeGoods, AtHome, TJ Maxx, etc.

And now for their little 4 year old boy’s side. The drawers on his side doubles as toy storage in addition to school supplies on top.

His remaining larger toys are in the closet on these cute shelves my client’s husband installed.

I love that the utility boards are magnetic which means you can add all types of fun things! There are also many accessories like hooks, boxes, etc. that you can attach.

The kids both loved their space and it was a joy to watch them begin using it right away!

With the added storage space on the Elfa system, and in the closet the floor space opened up and allowed maximum room for the kids and dogs to run around and play!

Special thank you to The Container Store for sponsoring the Elfa system. Affiliate links used.
